I like Team Apart because its look and feel combine both the functionality and the informality of Internet culture. But Team Apart also wins on my list of must-have features for a small-group meeting space, like video windows and the ability to save a meeting room.

Unlike other collaboration apps, Team Apart uses video conferencing, persistent workspaces, real time online collaboration tools to offer users enormous value at no cost. The target market seems to be small businesses, individuals, families, student groups, etc..

Group collaboration services are becoming more popular and more viable but there is still plenty of room for improvement. Team Apart, a new service recently launched in private beta, is joining the growing number of startups trying to provide a better solution. The package includes web-based video and audio chat capabilities, a text editor and a whiteboard, all updated in real time.

Team Apart launches in beta this week, offering free video chat and real-time collaboration in workspaces for up to four people. Such messaging and collaboration solutions are popular at a time when companies are fed up with licensing video conferencing applications from Cisco, Microsoft and IBM.

Team Apart is an online meeting space and collaboration tool launched in private beta today. The software includes a browser-based video/audio conference, a text notepad, and a whiteboard for drawing. All of these options are updated in real-time for conference attendees, and the conference space can persist over time.

Enter Team Apart (formerly Meetcast), a Y Combinator-funded startup that is now launching its free, web-based workspace application. And it is something to behold: not only does it carry basic virtual meeting features such as demo support and video chat, but it has an array of features that make it a useful virtual workspace.

Here's the quickie review of Team Apart: Its cuteness and simplicity make it easy to start. Its persistent, permanent meeting rooms and $0.00 price make it hard to leave. Unlike Google Docs, WebEx, DimDim or Adobe Connect, the rooms feel clearly designed for recurring meetings of small teams, rather than focusing on presentations to outsiders.

It's no secret that group collaboration services like WebEx can be a major pain, particularly when they require proprietary browser plugins (some of them don't even support Macs at all). Team Apart, a new startup launching in private beta today, is joining the fray of startups looking to offer an easier solution.
